Why daily regimen is so important in Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the science of life mainly focus on maintaining the health of the healthy person as well as curing the disease of the diseased. There is a branch of Ayurveda which deals with the maintenance of health of the healthy person (swastha) and is called Swasthavrtta. To maintain healthy and disease free life, one should follow Dinacharya. Dina means day and charya means regimen or routine. It includes the entire daily activities of a person right from waking up early in the morning till sleeping at night. Ayurveda gives equal importance to daily routine as that of medicinal therapy. Following healthy lifestyle makes us more and more healthy and increases our lifespan. Unhealthy lifestyle causes imbalance of doshas which ultimately leads to diseases. So knowledge of dinacharya is very important for those who wish to attain objectives of life.
One who is desirous of long healthy life should wake up at Brahma Muhurta which is 1 and half hours before sunrise. It is best time for gaining knowledge. Evacuation of natural urges, oral hygiene, nasal medication, applying collyrium, gargling, inhalation of herbal smoke, chewing betel leaf, application of oil on body, physical exercise, dry massage, bathing, taking food at right time etc are included in daily regimen or dinacharya. These are required for maintaining personal hygiene and to keep oneself free from diseases. But there are some contraindications in certain disease conditions. For example, application of oil is not recommended in vitiation of kapha dosha, indigestion. Brushing of teeth is not indicated for those affected with indigestion, vomiting, facial palsy etc. So dinacharya is to be followed according to the condition of the person. Apart from this, wearing clean clothes, footwear are also included under dinacharya.
The above said activities are related to our body. This provides us good physical health. But health actually means physical, mental, social well being of a person. For this, we have to follow good habits and manners in our life. It includes worshiping god, helping the poor, respecting elders, teachers, guest, physician. Never insult others, should posses positive approach and thinking, talk pleasantly, never show enmity towards others, have control over the senses, avoid bad habits such as drugs, alcohol, smoking etc. Every activities related to body and mind comes under daily routine.
Now, in modern busy life, no one has time to do daily regimen properly because of workload, lack of interest in personal hygiene, or due to ignorance. For example, some people sleep too late and get up too late in the morning. This leads to lack of time for daily regimen. Irregular sleep habits leads to mental and physical stress. Some people suppress their natural urges according to their convenience. Natural urges should be expelled at the right time but not to be forced. Otherwise it causes many health issues. Whereas some people have irregular food habits such eating when not hungry, when the previous meal is not digested, skipping meals, eating heavily etc. Irregular food habits cause indigestion, digestive complaints. Some people have no time or are lazy to do physical exercise. Physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve body strength. But it should be practised moderately or according to individual fitness. Bathing habits depends from person to person. Bathing provide freshness to body and mind. It protect our body from infection, illness. It should be taken according to the condition of the person. It is not indicated during indigestion, facial palsy, etc.
Regular toilet habits, food habits, physical exercise, personal hygiene are unavoidable for good health. This requires some part of our precious time. Most people complain that due to work, they have no time for proper health care. But such people should first understand that they have to give equal importance to health and work. This is because only a healthy person can perform well at work. Daily routine improve overall health and well being. It provides peace of mind, happiness, longevity, discipline in our life. In my opinion, dinacharya should be taught from childhood onwards so they acquire discipline and punctuality as well as they learn the importance of person hygiene. Practicing these from childhood makes daily routine as a unavoidable habit. Following daily regimen helps to save time.
Daily regimen varies from person to person. So each person should carefully plan his daily routine in such a way that suits him the best. Those persons who don’t have a regular dinacharya should start practice gradually. It means you don’t need to do everything all at once. Start slowly. Never be in a hurry. Through regular practise daily routine, will become a part of your life. Even if all people cannot follow all the daily regimen as such, they can make changes and try to work out a routine according to their convenience. But it should ultimately aim at protecting their health both physically and mentally.
Learning Ayurveda implies reading, understanding, applying and spreading to others. Those who learn Ayurveda , should understand the importance of dinacharya and try to apply step by step. It means start from small small things. Because only by practical application of dinacharya in your personal life, you will know the real benefits which is much above the theoretical knowledge. Students should keep in mind that are always should begin with self-care. Then you can care others. Self-care strengthens us and enables us to support others better. If you are tired and diseased, you cant help others. You alone are responsible for your health whether good or bad. So, take the full responsibility and start dinacharya as a practice which later turns as routine. You live only once. So live and enjoy life with good body and mind.
